Unresponsive Outlook over internet USB

I have been troubleshooting my mother-in-laws unresponsive Outlook issues for several weeks now. Whenever she brought the laptop over, I could never reproduce the problem on my network. Each and every time I brought up Outlook, it came up normally and continued to operate normally for the duration of the session. Figured whatever I did must have fixed the problem. She took the laptop home, hooked up the peripherals including the USB internet connection, then all of a sudden the problem came back. Certainly the problem could not be the USB connection between the PC and 2Wire home gateway, or could it. Unhooked the USB cable which forced the PC to make a WiFi connection. Brought up Outlook which launched without hanging or going unresponsive, amazing....

For whatever reason, having her laptop connected to the internet over a USB connection was causing Outlook to hang. Cannot recall why we did not use the provided network cable back when we originally hooked up DSL, but we did. In any case, we removed the WiFi and went back to a network cable which apparently resolved the problem.

She has a DELL Vista Home Premium PC with a 2Wire 100/1000 Gateway using DSL.
